Biography

Edward Arrington, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in ligamentous knee injuries, complex knee reconstructive procedures, sports shoulder injuries, shoulder instability, and complex shoulder reconstructive procedures.

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Arrington earned his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and then completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Board certified in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2022.

A former Clinic Chief of the U.S. Army Health Clinic at the Pentagon, Dr. Arrington has also served as Chair and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Director for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) and previously served as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Georgia. During his 30-year Army career, he has served as an orthopaedic consultant to the 1st Special Forces Group and the 2-75 Ranger Battalion, and he has deployed numerous times in support of ongoing operations.

Dr. Arrington is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he serves on the Exhibits Subcommittee and the Sports Subcommittee, and he is a Part II Oral Examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has served as a member at large on the Board of Directors of the Western Orthopaedic Association and is a past president of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Washington State Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Arrington is a prolific researcher who has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, including contributions to Skeletal Trauma of the Upper Extremity and Shoulder Arthroscopy. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Federal Practitioner and is an ad hoc reviewer for Military Medicine and Arthroscopy.

During his 20 years at MAMC, Dr. Arrington was named the Department and Medical Center Educator of the Year numerous times, and in 2021 he was named the Medical Center’s Researcher of the Year. Additionally, he was named his medical school’s Alumni Graduate of the Year in 2014 and was awarded the COL Brian D. Allgood Memorial Leadership Award in 2013, the single highest honor bestowed on a military orthopaedic surgeon by the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.
