Chronic Pain

Spine and back pain that lasts longer than six months is called chronic pain. It can range from annoying to debilitating.

The expert team of doctors at UT Southwestern’s Spine Center specializes in an array of proven therapies to comprehensively evaluate and treat patients suffering from chronic pain, including neuropathic pain and back pain. We offer both interventional pain procedures as well as noninterventional treatments.

Our multidisciplinary approach gets you access to neurosurgeons, orthopaedists, and pain management specialists with one call. The Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management at UT Southwestern is recognized as one of the nation’s leading centers for advanced therapies to treat chronic pain.

Our goal is to partner with our patients in their care, get them back to health as soon as possible, and help them achieve the best outcomes.

Diagnosis

If you have chronic back and spine pain, we’ll conduct a physical examination and order additional testing if needed.

Tests, procedures, and spine imaging studies used to diagnose chronic pain can include X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT).

Treatments

After diagnosis, we’ll discuss our recommended treatments with you. Treatment is aimed at relieving pain, improving physical functioning, and reducing pain-associated psychological distress.

Therapies include:

  • Epidural injections
  • Facet blocks
  • Selective nerve root blocks

We’ll create a care plan that minimizes the number of visits you need to make while also providing you with the support you need.

Clinical Trials

UT Southwestern conducts clinical trials aimed at improving the treatment of back and spine conditions such as chronic pain. Talk with your doctor to see if a clinical trial is right for you.
