Biography

Gary Lemack, M.D., holds the Rose Mary Haggar Professorship in the Department of Urology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He has a secondary appointment in the Department of Neurology.

He has been the Residency Program Director in the Department of Urology since 2004 and is the past Program Director for the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Lemack’s clinical specialties include urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, and voiding dysfunction in the setting of neurologic disease. In particular, he cares for patients with bladder conditions stemming from spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. He also performs complex urinary diversions for patients with severe bladder disorders due to congenital and advanced neurological diseases.

Dr. Lemack earned his medical degree at Cornell University and performed his residency at The New York Hospital. His fellowship training at UT Southwestern focused on incontinence, urodynamics, and neurourology.

Board certified in urology and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1999.

Dr. Lemack’s research focuses on the use of urodynamic studies in patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction/incontinence and on establishing best urological practices in the care of patients with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and other neurological conditions.

He has been named a Texas Monthly Super Doctor and D Magazine Best Doctor on multiple occasions.

Dr. Lemack is the Past President of the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) – which is the primary urology subspecialty organization devoted to the conditions affecting the pelvic floor, such as incontinence and prolapse. He has served on SUFU’s executive committee since 2005 and earned both the Paul Zimskind and Distinguished Service awards, two of the highest honors the society bestows.

He has also served on the board of the South Central Section of the American Urological Association and is a former member of the editorial board of the Journal of Urology. He is one of 12 trustees of the American Board of Urology and currently serves as the Chair of its Oral Examination Committee.

Dr. Lemack has authored two guidelines from the American Urological Association (Urodynamics and Stress Urinary Incontinence) and served as the American representative on the European Association of Urology Incontinence Guidelines. He has published more than 160 original articles and more than 25 book chapters. He has been a visiting professor at 25 locations throughout the U.S., South America, Central America, and Australia.

UT Southwestern urologist Gary Lemack, M.D., is a longtime leader in developing innovative solutions for women who have urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse.

A Texas Monthly Super Doctor and D Magazine Best Doctor, Dr. Lemack’s clinical expertise is focused on improving the quality of life for patients suffering from urge incontinence, stress incontinence, overactive bladder, and complex voiding disorders. He has a special interest in treating patients who have bladder problems resulting from neurological conditions, such as spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.

Dr. Lemack offers his patients a range of treatment options, from medications to office-based procedures to surgical interventions. He helped test and prove the usefulness of botulinum toxin (Botox) injections for improving bladder capacity and decreasing urge incontinence episodes in patients with neurological disorders. He performs the procedure more often than any other doctor in North Texas. He also offers neuromodulation procedures to improve overactive bladder symptoms.

Dr. Lemack’s research focuses on neurourology, evaluating bladder function, and optimizing treatments for stress urinary incontinence in women. He has conducted several National Institutes of Health-funded cooperative trials. His active clinical trials involve finding solutions for patients with treatment-resistant forms of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence.

Dr. Lemack wants people who have urinary incontinence, neurogenic bladder conditions, and pelvic prolapse to know that he can help them get back to a normal life.

“Many people with these problems think that’s the way they have to live their lives, and that is not the case,” he says. "We can improve quality of life for most, if not all, patients with incontinence, voiding difficulties, and pelvic organ prolapse.”
