UT Southwestern Medical Center has received Level 1 accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the new accrediting body formed by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Level 1 Centers of Excellence are hospitals with high-volume practices that have demonstrated they have the capacity to manage—and have committed resources to provide—complete and comprehensive bariatric surgical care, including care for the most challenging and complex cases. These centers set standards of care for weight-loss operations despite patients’ advanced age, comorbid conditions, and prior operations.
“We specialize in all types of laparoscopic, metabolic, and bariatric operations for disease prevention and treatment,” says Michael J. Lee, M.D., Director of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at UTSW. “Bariatric surgery has undergone a major renaissance as more surgeons and patients have learned there now is even stronger evidence that there’s no safer or better treatment for obesity and diabetes.”
He adds: “Patients who are going to have bariatric surgery—and their insurance carriers—want their care at a Level 1 center, which represents the highest level of multidisciplinary care. That’s what UT Southwestern offers.”
