New service puts critical info just a phone call away

A cancer diagnosis can be frightening and overwhelming. Inevitably, there are questions: What are my treatment options? What support services do I need? Are clinical trials available? What do I do now?

Here’s a suggestion: Pick up the phone. UT Southwestern’s Cancer Information Service, a free service operated by the National Cancer Institute-designated Harold C. Simmons Cancer Center, o€ffers answers and support to patients, as well as family and friends, newly confronted with a cancer diagnosis or facing the possibility of cancer.

“We answer general questions about cancer and cancer care, which can help you and your family make cancer-related decisions,” says Maria Grabowski, a UT Southwestern oncology-certified registered nurse who works with the Cancer Information Service. “And if you want to make an appointment at the Simmons Cancer Center, we can assist with that as well.”

Cancer Information Service nurses can off€er information and resources to help patients and loved ones be their own best advocate. “If you have questions about cancer, we’re here to help,” says Ms. Grabowski.

Staffed by oncology-certified nurses, the Cancer Information Service provides tailored cancer information about:

  • Prevention
  • Early detection
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
  • Screening guidelines
  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Clinical trials
  • Supportive care resources

The Cancer Information Service is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 214-645-8300. All calls are free and confidential.
