Malignant (Cancerous) Thoracic Conditions
Our team of highly trained thoracic surgeons at UT Southwestern Medical Center performs a wide variety of procedures to treat malignant thoracic conditions (cancerous tumors of the chest). Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive solutions –including thorascopic (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, or VATS), laparoscopic, and robotic surgery techniques. Our specialized team has more experience in treating malignant thoracic conditions than any other group in North Texas.
We provide state-of-the-art surgical techniques with a major focus on early diagnosis, better cancer staging, and multidisciplinary care to enhance the treatment of malignancies of the chest such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymic malignancies, and mesothelioma. Our NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the gold standard for cancer centers, is a center for excellence in patient care, research, and education, and is the only center with this designation in North Texas. We’re focused on making your experience at UT Southwestern as easy as possible.
We collaborate with UT Southwestern oncologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, head and neck specialists, and other experts to deliver true multidisciplinary and comprehensive care – all in one location and usually on the same day.
UT Southwestern also offers state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) lung cancer screening for patients at high risk for lung cancer.

We feature advanced imaging and functional techniques, including endoscopic ultrasound, PET, MRI, esophageal mucosal resection, and esophageal submucosal dissection.
Our thoracic surgeons treat cancerous conditions of the chest that include:
- Airway cancer
- Cancer of the chest wall
- Cancer of the diaphragm
- Esophageal cancer
- Intracardiac cancer
- Lung cancer
- Metastatic disease to the lung
- Pancoast cancer
- Pericardial cancer
- Pleural cancer
- Thymus cancer
In addition to standard treatments for thoracic cancer, UT Southwestern gives patients access to the most promising new therapies through clinical trials. Talk with your doctor to see if a clinical trial may be right for you.
