Back pain can be caused by a wide range of things – from injuries, pinched nerves, and herniated discs to spinal fractures and conditions such as arthritis and spondylolisthesis. Regardless of the cause, back pain can greatly diminish your quality of life.
The expert team of doctors at UT Southwestern’s Spine Center specializes in all available evidence-based treatments for back pain – both surgical and nonsurgical.
When surgery is required, our team of skilled surgeons can often perform minimally invasive procedures, which reduce recovery time. The Spine Center is one of only a few U.S. programs offering endoscopic surgery for back pain.
Our multidisciplinary approach allows you access to neurosurgeons, orthopaedists, and other specialists with one call. We strive to coordinate, facilitate, and expedite patient care, while saving our patients time.
Our goal is to partner with our patients in their care, get them back to health as soon as possible, and help them achieve the best outcomes.
If you’re suffering from back pain, we will conduct a physical examination and order spine imaging and other studies to determine its cause. Tests, procedures, and studies used to evaluate and diagnose back pain may include:
- Computed tomography (CT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Bone scans
- Nerve conduction studies
- Measurement of curve of spine (scoliometer screening)
After diagnosis, we’ll make sure you see the right experts to treat your specific symptoms. Our doctors treat back pain with a complete spectrum of multidisciplinary therapies that include:
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation
- Pain management treatments
- Epidural steroid injections, cortisone facet injections, and nerve root blocks
- Surgery, including minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures
We’ll create a care plan that minimizes the number of visits you need to make, while also providing you with the support you need.
UT Southwestern conducts clinical trials aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of back pain. Talk with your doctor to see if a clinical trial is right for you.
