Inpatient Rehabilitation

UT Southwestern is one of the nation's premier neurological and complex medical care hospital treatment centers and inpatient rehabilitation programs. The 36-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility offers hospital-based rehabilitation units that specializes in stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological conditions, trauma, burns, and complex orthopedic and medical conditions.

Inpatient Rehabilitation
The mission of UT Southwestern's Rehabilitation Program is to help patients achieve the highest level of independence, while providing attentive and personalized care using the most advanced therapies available.

The core values for the Rehabilitation Unit are:

  1. To be the rehabilitation unit of choice for our patients and doctors
  2. To be the rehabilitation provider of choice to insurers and managed care companies
  3. To be the employer of choice for employees

Our philosophy is to provide a structured clinical environment that assists patients with achieving their goals. Persons admitted to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Units will participate in three hours of therapy per day (or at least 15 hours per week) with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy, depending upon their needs. The rehabilitation team will educate patients about their impairment and train families in necessary supportive skills. The program emphasizes the provision of follow-up services to maintain and improve patients’ levels of function, safety, and independence. A discharge plan to include community resources and facility services will be developed by the rehabilitation team to identify opportunities to further patients’ rehabilitation process.

Inpatient Rehabilitation is a unit of the UT Southwestern Neuroscience Division, and is part of the Peter O’Donnell, Jr. Brain Institute.

We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), with an accredited Stroke Specialty Program, as well as The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and is recognized as a Magnet® Designated Hospital, the highest honor awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
