Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is transmitted predominantly by unprotected sexual contact with an infected partner. Although huge leaps in scientific knowledge over the past three decades have led to a much better understanding of the complex disease, preventing its spread has proved much more challenging.
The infectious disease specialists at UT Southwestern Medical Center provide expert, compassionate care to people infected with HIV and AIDS.
Our infectious disease specialists provide skilled management of AIDS and HIV and provide advanced testing, treatments, and monitoring for patients. AIDS and HIV counseling, nutritional consultations, and social work services are offered to assist patients in all aspects of their health care and quality of life.
We also offer supplementary AIDS testing to determine the type of HIV strain causing the patient’s infection. Using the test results, our specialists tailor therapies using combinations of treatments designed for specific HIV strains.
