Diabetes, a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Uncontrolled diabetes may result in blindness, kidney damage, heart disease, stroke, and amputations. Diabetes education makes a difference.
The Diabetes Management Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers a wide variety of educational programs for people with diabetes. Group and individual appointments are available Monday through Friday.
The risk factors for diabetes include:
- Family history of diabetes
- History of gestational diabetes
- Latino/Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American, Native American, or Pacific Islander
- Overweight or obesity
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- Sedentary lifestyle
Our educational programs are available in both English and Spanish and include:
- Diabetes during pregnancy
- Insulin initiation
- Insulin pump program
- Renal program
A physician’s referral is needed to participate in the program. The referring physician will receive documentation detailing your progress. Insurance benefits will be verified prior to scheduling.
