Filler Substances

Filler substances can be injected into the skin to fill depressed lines or scars as well as enhance the lips. They are commonly used to enhance the lower third of the face.

The most common applications include filling the “marionette lines” between the upper lip and cheek as well as augmenting the upper and lower lip.

Commonly used fillers include:

Restylane
An FDA-approved filler made up of hyaluronic acid, a substance normally present in the skin; effects last about six to 12 months
Collagen
A human-type collagen called Cosmoplast and Cosmoderm; effects last about three to six months
