UT Southwestern Medical Center plastic surgeons and dermatologists carefully administer Botox and related products based on a patient’s facial anatomy.

With our thorough knowledge of what causes lines and wrinkles – as well as the facts on product performance – patients can count on us to achieve a natural, refreshed look.

Reduce, Soften, and Smooth Lines and Wrinkles

Botulinum toxin products, such as Botox and Dysport, are noninvasive options to effectively reduce, soften, and smooth moderate-to-serious frown lines or wrinkles.

Because of the rising popularity of these products, we encourage people to be aware of what product they are receiving and who is administering it. It’s important to receive care at an accredited medical facility from a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist experienced with Botox and other injectables to make sure the product hasn’t expired or been diluted.

UT Southwestern surgeons and dermatologists have developed techniques to minimize discomfort, bleeding, and pain. Our surgeons have completed extensive training, typically six to nine years after completing their medical residencies. Our board-certified surgeons have passed rigorous written and oral exams.

About Botox

Botulinum toxin (Botox ® ) has been used safely in medicine for decades to treat certain medical conditions, and Botox injections are also performed to reduce facial lines caused by muscle movement.

Botulinum toxin injections have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat the frown lines between the eyebrows, and the injections are also commonly used to treat laugh lines or crow’s feet around the eyes. Additionally, Botox can be used to reduce excessive perspiration of the underarms, hands, or feet.

Facial Cosmetic Injections: What to Expect

The procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Local or topical anesthesia can be given, then the surgeon or dermatologist uses a needle to inject the Botox or Dysport. Most patients can return to normal activities, including work, immediately.

Results will vary between patients, and gradually take effect three to 10 days after injections. Effects last three to six months, and subsequent treatments are necessary to maintain optimal results. Side effects are usually mild and might include bruising, mild temporary swelling, mild headache, and slight pain on injection.
