Integrative Therapies

At the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, we will help you reduce the disruption of cancer in your life by providing integrative therapies, such as music therapy and meditation. These therapies are provided in addition to your state-of-the-art medical care and have been shown to improve well-being and quality of life during and after cancer treatments.

Many integrative therapies allow people the opportunity to express their cancer experience in a way that is different than talking, which is why they are so powerful. Also, the great thing about integrative therapies is that you do not need any previous experience, training, or talent to participate.

Art Therapy

Various forms of art can be used to help you express the emotions associated with cancer and its impact on your life. Art therapy can involve looking at art, discussing art, and making art with a multitude of different mediums (paint, pencil, chalk, mosaic, etc).

Digital Therapy

In this electronic age of instant messaging and social networking, we offer Wi-Fi throughout our buildings so that you can stay in touch with your support network. We also recommend that you sign up for My Chart and take advantage of another way to communicate with your cancer care team.

Expressive Writing

Journaling has been proven to help process the life-changing impact of the cancer journey. It does not matter if you journal by writing on a piece of paper or typing into a computer. What does matter is that the act of expressing your thoughts through journaling improves your well being.

Guided Imagery and Meditation

With an experienced guide, you can use the power of your mind to increase relaxation, improve well-being, and obtain a sense of calm. Scientific studies continue to demonstrate the power of these techniques to improve a person’s quality of life. Look for the guided imagery and meditation classes on the supportive services calendar.

Music Therapy

Music can profoundly improve your quality of life during cancer treatment. Music decreases depression, pain, anxiety, and stress. Music therapy can involve listening to music, making music, reading music, and discussing or interpreting music lyrics.
