Nearly two-thirds of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy during their illness. At UT Southwestern, patients have access to some of the most advanced radiation treatment technologies available anywhere, designed to increase the safety and effectiveness of radiation treatment.
The Radiation Oncology faculty at UT Southwestern Medical Center are recognized experts in radiotherapy as well as in the relatively new field of stereotactic radiosurgery (SBRT or SABR), and they jointly staff the Annette Simmons Stereotactic Center with UT Southwestern’s neurosurgery specialists.

In addition, the radiation oncology department uses state-of-the-art machines to deliver other treatments, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Through computer targeting, all deliver a high dose of radiation more precisely to a tumor, thus sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Other advanced technologies such as Calypso, RapidArc, Align RT, and onboard imaging are selectively used to optimize the accuracy and speed of tumor targeting.
Specialists are available in pediatric care, partial breast irradiation, brachytherapy, total skin electron beam therapy, radioimmunotherapy, and re-treatment of previous radiation patients.
