How UTSW Handles Blood Clot Prevention – Patients Who Got Treatment to Prevent Blood Clots on the Day of, or Day After, Being Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Why Is This Important?

Some medical conditions predispose patients to the development of blood clots, especially if patients are bedridden. Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are usually very ill and cannot get out of bed to ambulate. Consequently, they are at high risk for developing blood clots.

UT Southwestern monitors the percentage of patients who received treatment to prevent blood clots on the same day, or the day after, admission to the ICU.
